Locking sections of Microsoft Word documents

Tips and Tricks - Applies to Infiniti v8.0 or later.

Note: This technique only works if the document is “.docx” (i.e. Word 2007 and above)

Locking sections or parts of a word document is a feature often used in conjunction with Infiniti. Infiniti can still make changes to locked sections during the generation process but once the document is opened by the user these sections are ‘read only’.

  1. Place section breaks around the particular sections that need to be locked (in the example below, the red text is to be locked).

  2. Access the Restrict Editing option in your document:

    MS Word 2013
Click the File Tab and then click the Info option and then the Protect Document button. Select the Restrict Editing option.

    MS Word 2010
Open the Developer tab** and click Restrict Editing.

    MS Word 2007
Open the Developer tab**, select the Protect Document menu and choose Restrict Formatting and Editing.

**Note: For reference on how to access the Developer tab visit: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb608625.aspx

  3. From the Restrict Editing Dialog

Check the ‘Allow only this type of editing’ box, and use the drop down to select Filling in Forms.

  4. Select Sections

Use the Select Sections hyperlink and dialog box to select the appropriate sections to lock as needed.

  5. Click the Yes, Start Enforcing Protection button
